Characteristics of annual plants.

Annual Plant Overview

An annual is a plant that completes its lifecycle in a year or less. The expression "grow as an annual" or "treat as an annual" means to plant an item in the spring after the last frost, enjoy it from spring through fall, and then discard.

Annual bedding plants are different from perennials in many ways. Cold weather is very damaging to annuals and they most be protected against it; therefore, arrival after the first frost is desirable. They are a springtime favorite because of their color and their lasting ability throughout the spring and summer season. They will die in the fall after the first frost and are considered a one-season plant. Vegetable plants are considered annual plants. Their timing and planting characteristics are the same as annual flowering varieties.
